A lifelong passion for surgery saw Gavin complete six years of study at University of Sydney. He then spent 6 years gaining experience in general, cardiothoracic and plastic surgery prior to entering the formal plastic surgery training scheme. As a student and surgical trainee, he was already involved in the development of groundbreaking techniques, and published landmark papers in leading surgical journals and gave lectures at international conferences.
He completed a four-year traineeship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at many of Sydney’s major teaching hospitals, and received a Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (FRACS PLAS) from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in early 2008.
Gavin returned from his overseas training to a Visiting Medical Officer position at Liverpool Hospital. For 10 years, he was the primary provider of breast cancer reconstruction and facial trauma services at the hospital. He was also the Head of Department for 5 years during that time. Dr Sandercoe left Liverpool Hospital at the end of 2008, and no longer has any public hospital appointments.
Gavin performs the majority of his procedures now at Norwest Hospital, where he has been the head of the Department of Plastic Surgery since 2015. He does have accreditation at other hospitals and day surgeries but operates there less frequently.
As you look under “Our Surgeons”, you will find that there are some procedures that Dr Gavin Sandercoe no longer performs. Operations such as breast cancer reconstruction are often best managed by a surgeon that is performing microsurgery frequently and has access to a multi-disciplinary breast clinic.
In a normal week, Dr Sandercoe consults at Norwest Plastic Surgery on Tuesday and Friday, and operates on Wednesday and Thursday.
When he’s not in in surgery, you may find Dr Gavin Sandercoe surfing, rock climbing or training for a triathlon or marathon. Dr Gavin Sandercoe has represented Australia at the World Half Ironman 70.3 Championships 4 times, and has completed 5 full distance Ironman races and 5 marathons. His most recent race was New York Marathon in November 2019. The aim for 2020 was the 6 Foot Track Marathon, UTA50 and Morocco 70.3 but everyone knows how 2020 has panned out;
